ALGARVE, PORTUGAL

Monastery

.   .   .   .   .

A drive up from Monchique toward Foia’s peak lies an old monastery.  It was built in the late 17th century and collapsed shortly after due to an earthquake, the same one that leveled Lisbon in 1755.  It’s now open to visitors who venture to hike up and look around.  It’s not owned by anyone in particular but the grounds are looked after by a farmer who is always pleased to show you around and tell you a bit about its history.  Although it lies in ruins the monastery has a certain romantic charm.  The light that seeps in, through where once there was a roof, is magical at all hours of the day.  It would make a lovely wedding venue for an intimate wedding,  either for the ceremony or a romantic reception under the stars.
